2-4 Rationale: Balancing Quantity and Quality

The baseline survey on the situation of mathematics and science in schools in Kenya conducted at the onset of SMASSE in 1998, pointed out the following problems:

  1. Attitudinal factors
  2. Teaching methodology
  3. Mastery of content
  4. Professional interactive fora for teachers
  5. Development of teaching/learning materials
  6. Administrative factors
In order to reverse this trend, the project recognized the need to enhance the quality of teaching in terms of attitude, teaching methodology, mastery of content, assessment, resource mobilization and utilization etc. through INSET.
